What is the UKMT Junior Maths Olympiad?

The Junior Kangaroo and Junior Maths Olympiad are both follow-on rounds to the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge.

The paper contains 6 questions worth 10 marks each, and students are awarded marks based mostly on the clarity of their workings as well as their final answers.

If you have qualified or want to try out some of the questions, try this free online course working through past JMO problems (click here)!

The video here includes information about every UKMT competition, but if you click play it will start at the section about the Junior Challenges.

Note: In 2025 the Junior Olympiad has changed and will now just have 6 x 10 mark questions (the old Section A has been removed) Read a blog post about the changes here.

Can I Still Take the Junior Olympiad If I Didn’t Qualify Automatically?

If you do well in the Junior Maths Challenge, you can qualify directly to the Junior Kangaroo or the Junior Olympiad. But if you didn’t qualify (or even if you didn’t take the JMC!) you can still enter via a discretionary entry. To learn more about these, take a look at the page here!

Where Can I Find Past Papers and Boundaries for the Junior Olympiad?

Mathsaurus has a table of past certificate boundaries for the Junior Olympiad available at the page here. These past papers are also available at the official UKMT website.
